This page is dedicated to SONY laptop chargers and we aim to answer many of the commonly asked questions about SONY chargers. The SONY laptop is one of the most common laptops in the world! So why is there such an abundance of variation on their chargers? To make you buy it from Sony at Sony Prices!

So what about actual Universals - will they fit Sonys? Some might but they usually have an abundance of connectors except the very one that you are looking for! The 6.5mm connector barrel connector that most Sonys need has a small centre pin - the pin is, in fact, 1mm for 16v Sonys and 1.3mm for 19.5v 19v Sonys - there are other minor Sony connector variations that are not easy to spot. This small difference makes a BIG difference. Many purchasers of Universals see a 7mm or 6.5mm plug with centre pin that looks the same as the Sony 6.5mm - but it's not! There are also minor differences in Sony connectors like the length and the thickness of the ridge on the plastic insert.

Next to consider is the OUTPUT i.e. the voltage and amperage (capacity) - Sonys are either 16v or 19.5v and the amperage varies between 2.5a and 7.7a. The VAIOs Pentium 4's like the PCG-GRX316MP and others require a heavy duty charger 19.5v 5.13a (100w) - 19.5v 6.3a (120w) 19.5v 7.9a 150w! Later Core2Duo (Dual Cores) using VGP and VGN 19.5v adaptors really require 4.7a (90w) - Sony has produced a range of VGN - VGP - adaptors less than 4.7a (less than 90w) These are cheaper to produce and have a life of about 13mths if you're lucky! So Sony can sell you a new one at well over £100!

Sony, bless them, call nearly all their Chargers "Universal" they do not mean that it is "Universal" in the context that we use the term Universal! (we us the term "Universal" to mean that the charger will fit many different laptops and has changeable connectors) They, Sony, mean that the charger will work in some other countries (i.e 100v output - as well as 240v output for UK).

Don't Gamble buy one from us! We get it right 99% of the time! If we get it wrong we will exchange the charger AND refund your postage! Then we will update our brains and our extensive database so that we will not repeat our error! Most suppliers will not exchange a charger if it is incompatible with your laptop- they believe it is your fault, not theirs!
